Button????

This button was found at a civil war site last week. I was wondering if its a civil war or civilian button. It has crossed cannons and a palmetto tree like the
carolina buttons but it lacks the writing around the edge. Thanks for your help.

Hi, It's hard for me to make out but are you sure that is a tree and not a flaming bomb? if bomb it is an ordanance button and could range from about1840 to the Civil War.

Hi, well seeing how that it was in a Civil War camp i doubt your button is a civilian. I don't know of any kind of civilian coat that would have had that on it. As to what kind it is I'm not ure, but it may be some type of early Militia button. Perhaps, South Carolina Artillery? Just a thought.

Responding to various comments in the posts above:
South Carolina state seal buttons show a Palmetto tree - whose fronds have a very distinctive form. The tree (or plant) on your button does not appear to be a Palmetto tree.

South Carolina state seal buttons have crossed arrows, not crossed cannons.

Unfortunately the button is too corroded to accurately identify the emblem on its face - but I'm certain it is not a South Carolina state seal button. In my opinion, it is Civilian. As a relic-digger for about 35 years, I've dug a great many civilian "flower" buttons in Confederate camps.
