Default Gettysburg Book

Hi all:

Was in Barnes and Nobel today and found a great book called the "Gettysburg Battlefield: The Definitive Illustrated History". It listed for $40.00, but was being closed out for $15.00 (less the 10% discount for being a member). It takes all the pictures from the period and matches up what the sites look like today, where applicable. It also has three dimensional maps of the battle. It's quite a large book and has nearly three hundred pages in it. The book is authored by David J. Eicher and printed by Chronicle Books. Thought you might want to check your local Barnes and Noble to see if they have it in your area.

Thanks for looking,

The reason these books are being discontinued is because there are serious problems with them! Filled with misidentified photos (like the pic from Fredericksburg ID'd as the RR Cut at Gettysburg) and errors, James McPherson announced that the publisher had to retract his foreword from future editions of the book. Luckily there will be no future editions. Also serious accusations of plagurism!

See the following link from the Center for Civil War Photography about this book: http://www.civilwarphotography.org/eicher.html

Here is just a hint of what they say:

Overview: An Illegitimate Work

Gettysburg Battlefield: The Definitive Illustrated History, by David J. Eicher (Chronicle Books, 2003), with an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. James M. McPherson, is a 296-page, coffee table-sized book that was billed as “the ultimate pictorial Civil War record.”

Instead, Eicher's book became hopelessly mired in a photo-piracy scandal that eventually led to McPherson's repudiation of the book, which features his name prominently on the cover.

Save your $15 for a bullet!

Wow I will definitely return the book and get my money back. I ordered two of Frassanito's books from Amazon. I had them years ago and was glad to get a line on what they were so I can have them again.

Thanks,
