Found this bullet in an area along the Peninsula Campaign route. I have found .69's before but all have a full conical base. This one has a flat cavity. Is it unusal?

Really? 200 views and no one has any idea? If someone has seen this before I'd love to know. I have only seen the conical base ones but that doesn't mean a whole lot so I'm looking for anyone's opinion. THANKS

The term I was looking for turns out to be "plug base". Turns out not to be a common round. Case closed.

Pardon the lateness of this reply. Yes, your .69-caliber 3-groove Minie with a plug-cavity base is "uncommon," because the majority have a conical cavity. However, many plug-cavity ones have been found at 1861 and early-1862 battlesites here in Virginia. I found a few "leftovers" on the December 1862 Fredericksburg battlefield. Can't quite call these "rare" -- but they are indeed "uncommon."

Regards,
Pete
