Attacked by Hornets/Wasps

Hello Fellow diggers,

I had a terrifying experience this past Sunday, while digging with my hunting budies, I overturned a small log, and a few hornets/yellow jackets came out-no big deal I thought, I swatted them away and began swinging my F-75. Maybe 10 seconds later I swear the entire hive came out and I was covered with hornets/yellow jackets on me (yellow with small black bands). I began to swat them as best as I could while holding my detector in my right hand. At this point I was covered and I began running away from the initial site-they followed me for at least 10-15 minutes. if there was a body of water or stream near by I would have gladly jumped in-but there was none.

After going to the ER last night to get my shot of penicillin and a shot of benedryl, after being stung maybe 30+ times over my entire body, I am happy and very blessed by the good Lord to be alive first and foremost to detect yet another day. But this has been a very sobering and learning experience for myself. How many of my fellow diggers carry a can of hornet/wasp repellent (other) into the field? Besides the typical first aid kit, snake bite kit etc, I think it is also important to carry along a can of bee/wasp/hornet/yellow jacket repellent. My entire purpose for posting this is to educate and make the detecting community aware of "hidden" dangers in the woods and like the boy scout creed: "be Prepared". What insect repellent do my fellow diggers use in the field and has anyone also experienced being englufed by an entire hive of pissed off hornets-and if so, what did you do? I pray no one else has to experience what I just did. Be safe and vigilent my fellow diggers....

Happy Hunting.

Re: Attacked by Hornets/Wasps without manners!

Wayne,

Sorry to here about getting bit so many times. I had two situations this year with the little devil bugs. First I was hunting an old school site that was really badly grown over and the guy I was with was just talking with me than I saw him take off like a jet down a small hill, out onto the countryy road and started ripping his clothes off and it looked like he was going insane. I dropped my detector to get to him. When I got up to him he had about 15 or 20 hornets on him and he could not get to them to beat themwith his hat so I started smashing them with my hads. Of coarse I had a pair of Nitrile detecting gloves on and they could not bite through them when I was smashing them. He got bit about 25 or 30 times too. What had happened was a hornets nest fell out of the tree above us and hit him in the back of the neck. The little devils went down his hooded jacket and that is why he was stripping off his clothes.
Another time I was hunting an old Boy Scout Camp when I got a great hit on the Minelab Xterra 70 that said silver! I took my shovel drove it home to the depth of about 10 inches flipped the plug and whamo here they came from the plug I just cut. I cut the side out of their nest and they didn't like that too much. I dropped the detector and when I started running away my head phones got ripped off my head and onto the nest. Now what a time it was getting them off my equipment so I could go back hunting. About 20 minutes later I walked out and draged the detector by the head phones to get it off the nest. It worked. I only got bit 3 or 4 times but two or three were in the same spot. I guess running and screaming like a little girl helped me to not get bit as much as you did.HeHE

Those stories gave me the heebi jeebies... I'm just starting out and haven't had an encounter with bees yet!
We do have plenty of fire ants around here in South Carolina and I'm constantly digging those boogers up but I'm TERRIFIED of bees!!
Not many things make me quiver but a bee turns me to a little girl! :)
