Hey Ya'll, After braving the cold wind today, I found this 2 inch Brass Buckle 7 inches deep. It has a pretty deep arch as you can see from the pictures. On the backside, it is marked with a trademark/hallmark ANCHOR, and opposite the anchor, the words SOLID BRASS are written, and beside those words is another ANCHOR trademark/hallmark. Any help on ID-ing this buckle would be greatly appreciated! Southern Smiles, Donna

Yes you are and yes I an.
Just can't help it some times.
A general service buckle could be used for most anything.
More than likely a waist best, the anchor my guess is English, date no telling.

About two years ago while checking out an old barn that was falling in.... I found a pair of spurs on a workbench.... a can of oil had fallen over... and the spurs were drenched in the oil... including most of the leather and straps...... the spurs each had a single anchor impressed into the iron/steel .... a logo or trademark. I did a Google search on Anchor Spur... and dad gum it..... I do forget the name of the company that made the spur. But, the anchor is very similar.... maybe its the buckle off of a very large spur.... something entirely the opposite of Shack's mini horseshoe!

Take Care,

Kim

Anchor

Hey Kim, Thank you for your info. I did a google search on Spurs with the Anchor Trademark, but really didn't find anything worthwhile . . sooooooo THINK!!! lol . .maybe it will come back to you. I'm hoping you didn't kill that brain cell! *wink I did however find a company who makes 'brass' items with an anchor trademark called John Russell & Co., Brookfields, St Paul’s Sq., Birmingham,England. I only found the name in a listing with no information. HEY, maybe this 2 inch buckle is a girth/cinch strap buckle for Shack's miniature horses!!! lol Southern Smiles, Donna/b]

Hi,
I do know that "anchors" were a code-mark on Confederate imports from England, particularly muskets.
I've personally seen a LeMatt pistol with "Ala"(Alabama) stamping AND AN ANCHOR MARKING LIKE YOURS.
I think you probably,if not likely, have an English item brought into the Confederacy.

Donna,

More info on the Anchor trademark on your brass buckle. The company that used the anchor was North and Judd. On another forum a guy had posted a buckle with the anchor on it. I did another Google search and found the name of the company again. Another guy found that they did supply the union army with small brass items, including horse tack items.... in business since about 1810 I think he said, and they were bought out in the 1960's.

I think my spurs date to about 1910 or so, but your buckle good very well go back to the Civil War.

Take care,

Kim

Thanks

Hey Kim,
Thanks so much for the info on the Brass Anchor Buckle. I figured because of the location, the other items that I found, and the depth of the hole, it had to be close to Civil War era. I've written down your info, and will do some research on that company. Have a great weekend, and I'll be out digging when the weather cools down. I don't do much in the North Carolina hot/humid times. Southern Smiles :p Donna
