I found this today, while digging my garden in Kentucky. Does anyone know where it my be from? I've looked at a bunch of buttons today, but can't find any with crowns on in the US. Looks like a thistle on there too, so maybe a Scottish connection?

I think it might be copper or brass and the back is completely corroded. It is approx 1 inch diameter

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Dunester:

The golf clubs were the give-away—see your button on eBay at:

eBay.com.my: 1800's Coat Button with Crossed Golf Clubs and Balls (item 250316356840 end time Mar 28, 2009 03:53:12 MYT)

“Up for auction is a 19th century Coat Button with crossed Golf Clubs and a couple of balls with a Crown at Top. It measures 1.25 inches across and is in nice condition with a nice old patina.”

Now, if indeed 19th century, it would be an interesting bit of research to find which (if any) golf club/organization is represented.

Thank you :)

Thank you very much for a fast reply, and giving me a starting point! I guess the next step is to see how it ended up in Kentucky, I know South Carolina has a strong Scottish heritage, and it's not that far away.

See: ROYAL BLACKHEATH GOLF CLUB.

Now, if only Lincoln and Davis had settled over a nice round—maybe best 2 out of 3?

Addendum--

Check this out (your button is shown—also found in the U.S.)--and see the quote that follows:

Ancient Blackheath revealed by Metal Detector The Blackheath Bugle

“Then it hit me. This map wasn’t in Blackheath, in Kent, or even in the UK… The find was made in the USA…Before you get too excited about the prospect of ships exporting bits of Blackheath across the Atlantic, the Golf Tracer website points out that: These buttons were reproduced in many different variations and are plentiful throughout the World. So the badge shown above doesn’t necessarily come from Blackheath - it could be the 19th Century equivalent of the Manchester United football shirt: from the UK, but manufactured (and worn) all over the place.”

Wow! Is this a great web site or what? Last summer I was inspecting a crew plowing fiber optic telephone cable to a house on the bank of the Sunflower River in Sunflower County, MS. As usual (me being a long time relic hunter) I was looking at the ground for coins or whatever may be interesting (snakes, etc.).

In a gravel drive way I eye-balled one of the buttons in question. The patina looked good for it to be old and I kept it. Had no idea as to what it may be untill I came across this posting. Had thought about researching it but had no idea where to start. The button (along with several dug CW bullets) has been sitting on my desk next to the computer for most of a year. My button appears to have part of a brass back and what was an iron shank. It ain't in good condition, but what fun it is to finally get some info about it!
Thanks,
Gary
