Cannon piece?

I found this huge piece of what I think is a bronze cannon. I am not sure what metal it is, but can be made to shine really nice. It does not get a green patina, though. It has purple patina. Do you guys know what metal oxidizes purple?

I will check into purple. I have a friend that is geologist and metalurgist. he shoudl know.

Thanks CHuck. Man, I wish I could get a better color shot of the shade of purple this metal is. It is really pretty. Whatever it is, this is a large hunk of it. It weighs about 4 pounds.
