Could somebody explain "Rebated bases" to me?

When I look at and example of a rebated base in picture form, I cannot tell the difference between it and a flat base. Is it slightly concave or something?

Probably what is being refered to is a 'stepped cone' cavity. Refer to CIVIL WAR PROJECTILES II for a diagram of this.

Actually,

I have heard the term several times. One colelctor did use it to refer to a common post war base that had a slightt dish to it. Another used it in another context (can't remember). Id doesn't matter because neither is used as a main stream term.

Hi

The rebated base is a narrowing of the bullet normally a revolver bullet with a flat base or with a small hole. I have included 5 revolver bullets showing a rebated base, a glued paper base, a tie ring or ring tail, a paper bullet with tie ring and a serrated bullet which had either a paper or linen covering the powder and was glued to the bullet. It might have been a collodian attachment also. I hope this helps out on the rebated base question.

Boy brain not awake or too much caffine. The right hand rebated base should have included the word or just been serrated base.

Sorry about the goof.

Nice graphic. Tom, do you want to work on the Online Bullet book with us?

I think we could use the help?

I can do drawings as well and have some that would have to be scaled up to show better. I have a drawing on noses, body or groove styles, type of cast and caities, Greene carbine and Smith cartridges as well as others.
