Help needed with interesting buttons

I am new to this site and I think it is great. I recently found 2 buttons in my mothers old button jar. The backmark says "Extra Quality". They are round and domed brass with a 2-headed bird perched on what appears to be an arrow. The arrow has some sort of a banner draped on it. The birds heads are facing in opposite directions with a crown between them. There is a triangle shaped crest on its breast. I cannot tell what is in the triangle and it looks like nothing is written on the banner. They feel heavy as though they are good quality. Thank you in advance for any help that you can give me.

The "coat-of-arms" (or symbol) of Austria contained a double-headed eagle ...as did one or two other European countries. So, we cannot identify the nationality of your button without seeing a well-focused closeup photo of its face. Such national symbols are most often seen on military buttons and coins. If you cannot make and post a closeup photo of your button, I suggest searching the Internet for sites showing antique European coins and military buttons.

A couple of button diggers who currently live in Europe post their button-finds at another relic discussion forum. They may recognize your double-headed bird/eagle button. Try posting your question in the "Relics, Coins, and Bottles" section at:

About the "Extra Quality" backmark on your button:
Unfortunately, that backmark was used by many different button-manufacturers, and it was used for over 100 years (from the 1830s through at least the 1940s).

Thanks Pete I will take a picture tomorrow and get it posted. I really appreciate your response.

I attempted to take a close up of the buttons but my camera does not have a good enough macro lens. But I do have one observation. I agree with the possibility of a European style button because of the double headed eagle. I have a collection of world currency and this symbol does appear quite similiar to the Austrian currency. But here is a question. If it was indeed Austrian why would it have English on the back? And a bigger question, how did it get into my mothers button jar? Thanks guys!
