would be great, I am trying to find the differences between say Mounted Infantry, Infantry, Cavalry and Dismounted Cavalry, also did they have Battalion Engineers then and how big of a Regt would they be in or how were they distributed, also what was a Teamster, also like my great great grand dad came in and out as as Pri but some place I saw he was on detached service with a different Regiment, and even saw him one month as a Commisary Sergeant, could this be right, and then he would have mustered out with his original Reg as a Pri again, I am just curious,

Here is a start on your list of questions. Infantry walked. Later in the war the US government began issuing horses to some infantry to improve their mobility. They were called mounted infantry and still fought as infantry.

Cavalry rode horses. Usually when they got into a fight, they dismounted and fought on foot. Every fourth man stayed behind the lines holding his and three other horses until it was time to remount.

Sometimes (due to a lack of horses, the need for more foot soldiers or whatever) all of the horses belonging to a cavalry unit would be taken away. This occured several times in the CS army. That unit was then designated as being dismounted. Then the unit's official name would change from, say, the 34th Texas Cavalry to the 34th Texas Cavalry, Dismounted.

I just used that Texas regimental designation as an example. Do not know if there ever was such a unit or whether it served dismounted. There were some Texas cavalry units which did become dismounted, though.

I won't quote you on the unit.

Nice review of the unit types though. Let me know if you got my order.

Chuck,

Order received. I'm working to get signed up to accept credit card payments. Have a lot of bullets and some other assorted stuff now on my webstore and am adding more each day. Thanks for all of your help!
