I dug a maryland state button in poolsville MD. The back mark I have never heard of it says NY CLOTHING HOUSE BALT. MD. I know it is civil war because I also dug bullets in the same dig same place, has anyone heard of this co. it is not in the books?

Welcome Goldenponder:

It seems that the maker listed on your item indicates post-American Civil War manufacture. I did a little searching and found the following, which describes a token (hmm . . . could your button actually be a token?):

"The New York Clothing House has been in existence since 1875. Since 1887 it has been located at 102 East Baltimore street.”

Information from “The Numismatist"—published in Monroe, Michigan: March 1907, Vol. XX, Number 3, p. 79 (item number 90), as seen at: The Numismatist - Google Book Search

thanks for the information. I am trying to take a good picture with the camera i have and it is not going to happen. Here is the best I can do and it should show a dome shape button the size of a coat button shank.the words NY CLOTHING HOUSE BALT. MD. are around the shank two pieces

Maryland state button

It was a great, found it about 10 inches down. Just wish the maker was in one of the books. Just can't find it.

Hello again, Goldenponder:

I finally had a chance to check my books—wish I had done so for you sooner. I found your button maker. Evidently, indeed, a post-American Civil War maker, but a nice button find nonetheless. From “American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates,” by McGuinn and Bazelon, published by the same, Fredericksburg, VA, 2001 (Enlarged Edition), p. 88:

“New York Clothing House, Baltimore, MD. Retail clothiers at 102 E. Balto. St. from 1892-1921 but Rosenfeld Bros. began in c. 1865 per CD listings. They advertised military uniforms from at least 1908-12.

“N.Y. Clothing House/Balt’o, Md” (MD-18; FD-57A; MD-12)
“N.Y. Clothing House/Bald(sic) Md*” (MD-13)
“N.Y. Clothing House/Balt, Md.” (MD-13)
