Mortar shell question????help!!

A friend of mine found a spherical iron ball that ways exactly 42 lbs. And is 6 and 1/2 inches in diameter we had alot of civil war activity in our area but this ball is solid with a 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch hole right through the center. I have never seen anything like it and i've been around civil war relics for over 28 years, does anyone have a clue if it is a cannonball or some sort of counter weight. Thanks for replies!!!
