I went for a drive in the Illinois countryside yesterday to pick up my latest acquisition, a Model 1863 Type I musket. I always wanted a war dated Springfield, and the price was right.
I have really tried to stay true to the narrow relic collecting categories I focus on and not spread myself (and my wallet) "a mile wide and an inch deep.". Occassionally, I lapse and this was one of those times.
But it was worth it...
After picking it up, I made a short detour over to the Missippi River. The Bald Eagles are slowly working their way back North with the melting ice. They scavenge the dead fish that float out from under the ice at this time of year. In 50 minutes (including short drive time) I saw eight of them, 7 of which were mature white headed ones. I think I spotted a couple more flying over the river, but I was right underneath most of the others.
It was truly a neat bonus and will make the day I picked up my first, and probably only, musket one that I will never forget. When I look at the eagle on my musket lockplate, I will be reminded of my day spent bird watching.
