Found this thin brass piece in a Dragoon campsite. It's about an inch long and half an inch wide. I haven't a clue to what it is but I'm more interested in finding information about the crown that is stamped on it along with the letters VR. I drew a sketch of this thin brass piece to show you all what is on it. The piece looks to be broken off on one end and a crack through the middle which I luckily found both pieces in the field. This same crown I have seen stamped on a few cw gun plates below the hammer. The letters I'm only guessing would stand for "Volunteer Rangers". Has anyone ever found a piece such as this and share any information about the crown that you may know about. Thanks for any help.

The stamping is definitely British, symbolizing the item's manufacture during the reign of Queen Victoria. The astute Nemo is correct that the "VR" stands for Victoria Regina, which is Latin meaning Victoria, Queen ...and the distinctive British Crown symbol stands for the Kingdom of Britain.

The brass item you dug is part of the "swiveling" keyhole cover from a British-made padlock. The missing end of your keyhole-cover had a cylindrical stud extending from its reverse-side, which is how the keyhole-cover was attached to the lock's main body.
