Found this bullet in Central NC. You can clearly see on the second picture a US stamped on the bottom of the bullet. Just wondering what kind of bullet it is and if it's from the Civil War. Thanks

The knurled ring on that bullet is called a cannelure. Cannelures are placed on a bullet as a location for a brass cartridge case to be crimped, to hold the bullet in the case.
I believe that bullet is post Civil War. With some measurements of diameter, weight, etc., I might be able to tell you more.

Hello,

Any time you find a bullet with serrations in the groove is not from the civil war but what is termed a modern day bullet.

Some help in id'ing a modern day bullet:

1. the serrations in the groove.

2. a shallow bow in the base of the bullet from rim to rim.

3. the patina is usually different, more slick than the CW bullets. All this is subject to where found, soil conditions, which will affect the patina's feel.

I hope this helps juat a little.
