I then said to my men, " Pour it on them boys!" And shots ranged out killing all of the union guerrillas and their horses (probably got in the way). I said to my men that they did a good job, but they really didn't have to kill the horses, because some of our officers needed them, but it was OK. On our way back people asked how the brawl was and we said it was just a minor massacre with no prisoners. After the fire was put everyone went to bed, thank goodness it wasn't raining or has rained.Good night!

The next day we finally set out for the last 20 miles for the trip to the trenches of Petersburg, Virgina. Walking down the road I saw people praising us and saying that the yankees were coming. After a few more miles we finally got to our destination, the entrenchments guarding the train line. I never seen so many lines of trenches, and how they were so unclean with dirty water and bugs. But not to complain it is a safe place to be, when under artillery fire. After a few days we started to settle in and my journal I have kept has been filled, so I sended you this journal of my memoirs.

Love, Robert Poller

P.S. I love you my dear, Anna
