Puppy Paws from the Battle of Mobile Bay

Selma Hunter has already seen this one but I thought I would share a buckle that was found about 10 miles east of Fort Morgan, AL where Union troops decided to cross the swampland and turn north towards Spanish Fort, Al and Fort Blakeley.

It was encased in red clay which kept it from decaying. It has a great brown patina.

MichaelB:
Thanks for taking the time to make the picture. Your buckle is so perfect I can't tell what letter the puppy paws are under. If under the "S' dates prior to 1862 and if under the "U" it was issued late 1862 to early 1863. From 1863 on arrowhead studs were used.

Which letter is under the puppy feet. My guess is under the "U"

Stamped/

Hi, I was looking at your plate and noticed on the back that there appeared to be a stamp impression in the lead. Do you see that as well?

The Paws are under the U.

There is indeed letters stamped inside, great catch. My eyes are not what they once were but I can make out:
