I would like to honor CS Gen. Richard Taylor as my avatar. I've tried and tried to create a photo file that would take--either too many pixels, or file too large. Thanks! On your last attempt at the two photos, the pixel count was very close to making it below the threshold. Of the two, I still think http://stonewall.hut.ru/leaders/taylor.htm is the more interesting of the two photos, but whichever you can make work will be just fine. In the meantime, I'll keep trying to familiarize myself with this great web site.

Thanks for all your help, but looks like the 80X80 pixel restriction is firm (your latest attempt was 71X94 pixels). I think Chuck is aware of our attempts at avatar creation (by the cwbullet post above?) and hopefully he can come up with a solution (it's O.K. if my posts remain faceless--just glad to be a part of the site!).

It worked! Thank you Craig (and General Taylor thanks you--ha!). Chosing an avatar--aside from the technical details and difficulties, an interesting subject in itself. I had three CS soldier ancestors and one US--hmm . . . guess in my case it came down to a matter of numbers (and heck, the South almost never had such 3:1 odds--so guess somehow this is only fair--ha!
