Hey folks,

here are some news- wonder about the different shape of the two
russian shells I get.
The more pointed one is a normal HE shell-the roundet one is something special. This one with the more rounded nose, and only this was called Sharocha. "Sharocha" seems to be the name of the inventor.
This shell explode but the solid ball nose didnt separate. Its a multy purpose shell with an solid tip that shouldt penetrate covers.

Sounds interesting

Lothar,

So the "Sarocha" is an artillery shell and not a hand grenade. That would
explain the fuse and what appears to be rifling.

Keep on posting that good stuff!

More european artillery shells

Sorry Craig,
you are right ,in english its a shell. There is no difference in german language-(Handgranate,Artilleriegranate,ect.) :)

Here are some more european shells-

German lead shirt shells for backloader gun M/1861 and M/1864.Early
shells had an real thick lead shirt- later the core becomes thicker and containes more explosive. The thinner lead shirt was an harder alloy and was soldered to the core. The fuse is an impact fuse-an nailshaped pin locked the fuse. The pin flow away by rotation after leavig the barrel.

French shell - System La Hitte for muzzle loading guns.Fuse is an time fuse. The powder tray was ignited by the main charge passing the shell when firing-the windage brings problems in accuracy and performance.

:-?

In the top pic, the second looks like a British Armstrong shell with the
brass studs. The round ball looks similar to a CW Naval shell with the
three time fuses. The others I've never seen before.

I do have one question on your first post showing the Borrman round
ball. Is that a common shell to find in EU? That one must be a US import
(export). I would think that there would be a large surplus of shells
here after the war.

My German is very limited (one or two words) and I'm still trying to get
a grip on English!

These are all La Hitte shells -no Armstrong-its the same system .
There are 4 , 12 , and 24 pdr shells.

The round shell is an 12 pdr. incendiary with 5 holes .Was filled with an slow burning incendiary agent and burn out of the hole with a jet flame.

Well the Bormann fuse was an european design from Belgium .It works
well and it was only nessesary to thread the shells-so the new system was introduced all over the world.
Its possible but I never heared about imports of civil war surplus. It was
the time of modernisation and in the next war of 1866 only new systems was used no round balls.
