Third Union encampment of 2005-2006

Another picture of the Union Civil War Entrenchments

Hi to all My TH'ing Friends
Well I can see that these pictures are not all that good so next time out will attempt to take some that are better. I can't promise the outcome but will give it my best try.
Do good in all you do, enjoy the fruits of what you find, and have fun all at the same time.

Hi Digger Dave,

Man, you guys are having a great time. Just look at Wayne's smile.

Thanks for the effort in showing us the lay of the land and giving details of the trench layouts.

Fun stuff, thanks for sharing. Nice finds and continued good luck !

Thank you Rodney

Hi Rodney and all my TH'ing Friends
Rodney, thank you for your kind wishes and thoughts. I would love to be able to share the details of this site with everyone but my two amigos would string me up. we have hunted together on and off for the past six or seven years and after TH'ing with other 'buddies' I would be hard pressed to find better Friends. We do not compete with each other and when one of us makes a find be it super or average we are happy for each other. This is not to say that I give my finds away, although I have. In fact I have located targets that I knew up front were bullets and turned them over for my buddy to dig up. I am not here to pat myself on the back but I want to hope that all TH'ers will help out their buddies that come up short on the finds. I for one appreciate having two fabulous TH'ing Buddies that I can call my Friends.
Keep it real, have fun, stay safe and dig up some good finds to show everyone. :)

The site that keeps on giving

Hey Dave,

It was good to get out detecting with you once again on Saturday after almost a 3 month hiatus from the summer heat-too bad Mark could not join us though. Whether we find anything or not-it's the friendships and that bond of detecting that are most important-and I wouldn't trade that for all my finds-not to have you guys as good friends. This has been an incredible site and I can only hope we can continue hitting this site until the developers move in which I hope isn't until next year or later! Every time we detect here we continue to find additional drops, buttons, square nails, melted lead etc-all CW period. Congrats on yet another Federal General Service cuff button my friend!

Dave, my question: several fired .58s have been dug from this CW Union camp site area, however my .58 drop would indicate that Rebs at one time were in this area as well-or do you think they were just passing through when all indicators from the many bullets/buttons that we have found all point to Federal units? What are your thoughts? I'll be at your place this Friday around 8 for our road trip North Saturday with you and Mark.

My Therory on the 58 Cal ball shots found in a Union Encampm

Hi My Amigo Wayne and all my TH'ing Friends
Here is my theory on why we have found 58 Cal Ball Shots in our presumed only Union encampment site. First, I apologize to everyone as I won't give up the location of our site. We refer to our site as 'the site that keeps on giving'.
Please allow me to set the stage for everyone: the Union troops were on the North side of the road, my belief is that they were scouting the area for CS troops. The Union troops encounter a smaller group of CS troops with a small wagon train of supplies. The CS troops had four canons and the Union had four to match. Union canon destroyed one canon and caisson, decapitated four CS cannonades. The Union troops out numbered the CS troops by a two to one ratio. The CS troops were all South of the road and were firing to the North into the Union lines, while at the same time moving South in an attempt to avoid being destroyed by the Union fire power. Almost every bullet dug on the South side of the road have been fired. To date the list of fired bullets found to the South of the road includes two 69 Cal Musketoons, three 54 Cal Sharps, four 44 Cal pistol bullets, and one 44 cal ball shot. Now the list of drops found to the South of the road have all been found to the Eastern part of the search area includes eight 58 cal ball shot, five 54 cal Sharps, four 44 cal pistol bullets. To the North side of the road the list of bullets is more confusing as the Union were encamped in the site on multiple occasions thus the reason for so many different bullets have been found to date. I will start with the easier finds; one 58 Cal three ringer, one 52 Sharps complete with shell casing intact, two 54 Sharps Chewed bullets, many 54 Cal Sharps, many 44 Cal pistol bullets. This gets easier when you look at the fired bullets that have been found in the North side of the road are almost all CS bullets (assuming that the CS troops were the only ones to fire into the Union Encampment) five 58 cal ball shots, and the only Union bullet that I have recovered on the North side of the road is a 44 cal pistol bullet. I don't know what the fired Union bullet means in the overall story but I think the possibilities are that a Union trooper fired at a CS troop that was attempting to escape and it just so happened that in the confusion of battle the bullet was fired to the North as the Union troops had started chasing the CS troops out of the battlefield area. It is just possible that the Union trooper got further to the South and got behind the CS lines, saw a target and fired. I wish I could provide a line drawing as I think it would help explain how things went down. now mush of what I have said is speculation, my Theory alone. This is my view on what happened, where everyone was during and after the battle. I could be right and I could be wrong, only time will tell for sure.
I trust that I have not totally confused everyone with this message.
Have fun in all you do, be safe, and do right at all times.

Hi Dave,

Don't forget that case shot also came in similar sizes. Those lead balls may be from exploded shells. May match up better with your thread about all of the artillery being fired.

Still enjoying the posts, thanks for sharing this with us.
