There has been an increase in deliberately faked relics by crooks (what else can you call them?) who sell them to the unwary collector. I have seen bogus Civil War items on Internet auctions, antique stores, and flea markets. Unfortunately, some people who have been burned by fakes get discouraged and quit the hobby. Our first line of defense is knowledge. Buying from people who are knowledgeable and who guarantee their relics is a good strategy for the serious collector.
