From an internet posting - let us know if it works. I hope is is helpful to some of you, although I know that a few of you seem to be allergic to soap!

Easy Tick Removal

I think it is worth sharing...especially since this is tick season...

A pediatrician tells what she believes is the best
way to remove a tick. This is great , because it works in those places
where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes,
in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the
soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20).
The tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when
you lift it away.

This technique has worked every time it's used it , and it's much less
traumatic for the patient and easier for the person trying to remove it.
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be
damaging in any way.

PS: That's how you get a hillbilly out of the bath tub. Throw in a bar of soap

ticks away

All right,
Let's see what my daughter has learned in pharmacy school. She came home the other day with a bottle of b6 tablets and told me to start taking them if I was going to hunt in the woods this summer. I started and so far it is working.
P.S. I ain't been in the woods yet but there have been no ticks on me when I get home from the office.
Tim

Unfortunately my office IS the woods! I spend most of my time at work changing gas meters and finding gas leaks outside in the elements. I'm susceptible to ticks, poison ivy, chiggers, mosquito's, snakes and spiders AAHHHH I hate spiders!!! Can't remember the last time I had a tick problem but thanks Selma for the tick removal tip. I'll sure try it if the tick problem occurs. My worst problem is poison ivy, my goodness it's everywhere!

A gob of vaseline works as well but I like the soap idea better. I'll give that a go.
Thanks !!
I'll also give the B6 a go too !
I do lots of woods digging and bring loads of those nasty little devils home with me.

How much B6, and how often? I was at Sam's this morning looking for B6 and saw B12. Is it twice a good?

b6

Jimmy,
I think that they are two different formulations of the vitamin. B6 has something to do with amino acids. My tab lest are just b6 and 100mg. I take one per day and will let you know how it works. I have noticed that not as many mosquitoes have been attracted to me while outside out night.

Bill,

The Vet told us to use a Dish washing detergent on our Schnauzer.... since he doesn't exhibit a skin allergy to it. He said the soap, when left on long enough "smothers" the tick, etc.

Most of our hunts are in the woods as well. During and after a hunt a couple of weeks ago, I removed 17 ticks from various parts of my person. The larger ticks aren't as much a bother as the darn seed ticks. When you get into a mess of them little boogers, you've got a serious problem!

Other than the parasites, we have to contend with Copperheads, Cotton Mouths, and Timber and Pygmy Rattlers. And if that ain't enough.... the occasional Boar Hog or Momma Hog guarding their brood. Tim and I walked up on 8 hogs yesterday.... thankfully no young'uns were with them, and they made a hasty retreat.... but not before Tim had his Lesche shovel drawn back like a baseball bat!

Take care (especially in the woods),

Kim

Here in Missouri we have the dreaded Diamondheaded Copper Moccasin. THEY will put the fear of God in you, I kid you not.

hunts

Kim,
Are you sure you have not crossed over the Mississippi and been hunting my spots. I think we are working the same territory and since you have hunted with Tim It makes me feel like I have missed a couple of hunts.

Tim,

Check your PM's . I thought I was replying to this post, but after typing the post and clicking submit..... found out I had typed a PM.

Sheesh.... guess it's too early for typing and thinking at the same time!

After a day of hunting, I found a seed tick on my hip this AM. Tried the liquid soap trick, but couldn't get it to let go. Finally, the tweezers were used to get the tick out. Maybe I wasn't holding my mouth right, or didn't say the incantations in the proper order to get satisfactory results with soap.

Let it Dawn on You

Jimmy -

Use more soap, even if you are allergic to the stuff. May I recommend "Dawn" dishwashing detergent? It is alleged to have some magical powers of mysterious origin. [and it's cheap]

I use soap all the time, but the cats hate me for that. Maybe if they'd be still long enough for me to get it off before they shred my hands and arms and chest and cheeks (upper, not lower), etc. we'd get along better. Nothin' quite like watchin' a cat blow a bubble (front, not back) and then chase the darned thing. Soap? Heck, I NEVER use the stuff. Ever since Mom used it for toothpaste one Sunday afternoon after an inopportune "exchange" in the churchyard with another young'un got overheard. Got had with the old "Oreo" trick once too. Plum turned me agin' the stuff. Been using turpintine ever since - yep, ever Saddidy nite.

nuff said.

Soapless Selma

Heck, we gotta do something to evoke some images - cain't post'um!

tick removal

Update on B6. The vitamin did not completely keep all ticks off of me while in the woods. I have attended an entomology camp this week and since learned that b1 is better.
Jimmy,
Be careful about using tweezers to remove ticks. When squeezing the tick causes it to excrete the Lyme and rocky mountain disease. Better to pull with the fingers or use the Vaseline or soap method. I don't know what happens if that don't work. Eventually they will get full and fall off anyway. Ha.

Hey if you want to see something else with liquid soap ...try it on wasps. I had some Africans show me this trick. Seems like all they can afford over there is detergent and they use it for flying insects. Mix about a 50:50 solution in a spray bottle and set to "stream". I saw them "wasppers" killed on the fly.
