Weekend Virginia Finds

Greetings all, got in a few hours of digging yesterday before the rain started. Was very lucky to dig this US bit. I say lucky becuase not everyone is fortunate to find one that is broken in half. Found one boss nearby(which i reinstalled with a bamboo kabob skewer), but that was it, however I think my re-enactor friends could do a pretty good battle of the crator from all the earth that I shoveled up. This was the first iron object that I have recovered that has distinguishable writing on it. Incase my baby powder treatment is not readable the bit is stamped FAIRBANKS ST.JOHNSBURY VT. If this means anything to anybody how about a reply?

The one I found has no writing on the bit and no period on the US. Someone please explain the period between the U and S and why mine has no period. Help.
