Dave brought them over to my house and I had a look at them. They seemed to be a two piece, tin back button. They do not have a backmark. If the back is not tin.... it is something like zinc. They are not a threaded button, but some sort of a snap peice in the back. There was still some blue material still clasped in some of the snap peices. From looking at the back and the two piece design... my suspisions are that the buttons are from about the 1870's, probably a civilian coat. Can any of you button buffs out there verify this?

thanks spect for helping me out withall the specs. :D  :) 8)

Dave

Dan Binder sent me a reply that he thought the button was of civilian use not a military button. That is not to say it could not have been used by a soldier. Can you send me an email with an attachment of the back so I can forward it to Dan?

Ok Fonz... here is the scoop on your buttons:

The backmark was deciphered(?) to be RAUF Co.
The company RAUF was founded in 1965 and have contracts to make heavy clothing for the military and for heavy civilian use.. Now the backmark was taken from one of the snaps that was part to the finds in the hole with the other stuff..... so I cannot say for sure that it is the same for the buttons pictured above. I wouldn't assume the buttons shown to be much older (if at all) than the snaps. They sure had me fooled because of the depth and the old-style two peice construction, but turns out they are nothing, except a cool find on a hot day. These buttons were constructed as such due to the fact that they were intended for heavy duty useage. Sorry bro.
