Wondering about a button

Hi. We are some newbies that have made some interesting finds at the site of an 1865 cavalry skirmish. We found a spencer round and a sharps bullet. Near by were a button and maybe a rivet. The back of the button reads "A. MATTHEWS". Can you tell us anything about them? Thanks for your help.

Looks like a civilian "flower" button to me. The white metal suggests pewter.
