Multi Barrel Bronze Cannon....Check this out!
Ok, here is another topic for today..
This is another piece from the French Army Museum in Paris at the Invalides. A large bronze cannon from the 1600's with one large bore and several smaller around it. A rapid fire cannon! And just when you think you have seen it all!!! Brad

As far as I could tell it was designed to fire all barrels at once.....This is just one of many of these strange pieces I see over here. A lot of them were probably more experimental than anything and do not represent what was commonly used in the field, but then as now, people were looking for more effective ways to kill other people and this is a good example of that.
I personally (as a 20 year veteran of the US Army Artillery) would stay way behind this this thing when it went off!!! Brad

Very interesting piece!! It must have been impressive when touched off. Though it sounds a lot like the old 90mm recoiless rifle. You weren't safe in front of or behind that thing either!!

A very interesting post and darned good find. I've got one or two images that I'll have to scan before posting, but you are in a goldfield of history. Do any of your nearby museums display any of the foreign arms that we read about as being purchased for American use? I had a chance to visit the British Imperial War Museum in the '80's and was so enamored with warplanes I forgot about the other neat stuff. Thanks, Bill

I have'nt been in Athens,Georgia in many years-but there was/is a Confederate double-barrel cannon in front of the courthouse.
It was supposed to fire from both barrels at the same time with two cannon balls attached to a chain. The idea was to "sweep" an enemy unit with a chain & two balls. I understand that the gun was unsuccessful due to ignition irregularity between the two tubes-resulting in a broken chain... Maybe some of the cannon gurus to add something to this Confederate experiment in multiple barrel artillery...
