Default 26Oct08 Fnds (SuperSnail ! ) LOL

So Tn Mxt and myself are walking the woods searching. Nothing fancy turns up but the usual plain clothes button, a couple small round balls and a gilted hinge thingy about 3/4 inch long. Looks like it is attached to leather because of the two rivets on either ends.

Anyway, I get this iron signal and pop out this Super Snail looking fossil ( No it wasn't the signal, just an innocent bystander.) Its about 2 1/2 inches wide and tall. Probably a 1/2 fat. I forgot what my huntin buddy called it, but I'll call it "Super Snail" for now.

Frank, What you got there is a Ammonite marine fossil! Circa 400million years ago and became extinct at the close of the Cretaceous (65m.y.a.) along with the dinosaurs. There closest living relative is the octopus, squid, and the cuttlefish. Generally, they had ridges but some were smooth. Large specimens grew to the size of a basketball. Where we were digging for relics was once covered by a large land locked salt water ocean here in Tennessee. Most marine fossils are more frequently found in the western part of the state around Nashville. Nice finds with all your stuff, give me a shout when your ready to head back out, Scott(MAN-HOLE-COVER
