Default Civil War Trunk MOH

Chester Furman was one of my ancestors, he won the Medal of Honor for his actions at devils den during the battle at Gettysburg.

I have his trunk, and the story in our family is that he carried this trunk during the civil war. The trunk is in amazing condition, and based on the pictures I have from that time period, and all the other stuff I have seen, I find it hard to believe that he would have carried this during the war... It seems to me it would be more worn. I also have his shaving mirror and razor from the same time period.

Anyway, I have never seen a trunk with this style of construction before, I love woodworking, and I was thinking about making some others that mimic the construction of this trunk. But, I would like to find out more about it first. Any info would be appreciated. I also don't have the key, I am sure it is in the family stuff somewhere, but are these able to be easily replaced?

Here are some pics.
