I am not so sure that is a buttplate.
The upper, or narrow part, does look like the top of some military buttplates, but, usually that top would be bent about 90 degrees to fit along the top of the buttstock. The shape of the larger part doesn't look quite 'buttplate' to my eye.
On the other hand, if it's not a buttplate, I've no idea what it is.

Jack is correct that "usually that top [of the buttplate] would be bent about 90 degrees to fit along the top of the buttstock." But I have seen a few dug brass buttplates whose L-shaped body had been hammered completely flat. So, I think your brass item MIGHT indeed be a rifle/musket buttplate. Note that the area where the L-shaped angle would have been does look hammered-on.

The two screwholes are in the right place for a buttplate. (Not all rifle/carbine buttplates had three screwholes.)

I did a short internet-search of various civil war era BRASS buttplates for you ...but my short search didn't turn up a match. Since it's your item, you might want to do a more lengthy search for civil war (and pre-war) rifles which had a brass buttplate with 2 screwholes, to see if any match up with your buttplate. Important note: The bottom end of your brass buttplate looks like it might be broken off. I can't tell for sure about that from your single photo. If the bottom end IS broken off, you'll need to keep that fact in mind when searching for a match-up. The unusual shape of your buttplate's "tang" (the part which fit along the top of the gunstock) should be a helpful clue as you look for a match-up.
