civil-war-double-barrel-shotgun-id-question-img_3828.jpgHello, I am new to this site and looking to get a few items cleared up and identified. This shotgun was told to me by my father years ago "you know how this story goes" as beings my Grandfathers Coach shotgun during the Civil War which I do know for a fact he was a confederate soldier. It is marked on each side of the receiver S.H.C. thats about it on the outside marking unless I am missing something. Somewheres along the line it was reblued I think as well as a recoil pad installed. Was the shotgun cut down in its period or was it a coach type gun? I dont know how to take off barrels to look under it for other marking so info on that would help as well. I am really searching for facts relating to this double barrel so I can put it to rest weather being Civil War or not, any help is greatly appreciated.

Your shotgun is a breechloader, which I believe would make it a post Civil War firearm. To my knowledge, all of the Civil War shotguns used would have been muzzle loading.
As best I can tell from the photos, the barrels are fluid steel, rather than Damascus, which would be a second indicator that the shotgun is post Civil War- maybe by quite a few years.
The gunsmith at a local gun shop, if there is one near you, could tell you more- including how to disassemble the gun.
