    The La Junta Button

The last time I posted a button that I thought was really old, I was told you could buy a card of 3 for $2.99 at JOANNE'S, and it was true! Hopefully this one is different. My son dug this last week in La Junta, Colorado. This area is long in railroad history, but CC doesn't translate well...

The La Junta Bullet--What kind is it?

This bullet was found last week by my son in La Junta, Colorado. Now, La Junta was not a hotbed of sedition, but it was in a general area with significance to the Indian Saga, both pre and post Civil War. In fact, the Sand Creek Massacre (1862?) wasn't far from this area, relatively speaking...

What's with this bullet? Pulled or poured?

NEW THOUGHTS--SCROLL ON DOWN 4/15/11What's with this bullet? Pulled or poured? There is some new information about the "ring around the bullet". New to me, anyway, and maybe somewhat of a new reveleation to some of y'all. Scroll on down towards the end for more thought-provoking...

    Another interesting bullet--HELP!

Photo on a different angle Here is another shot, including all of the horizontal rings on the bullet. Not much, is it No traces anywhere else. Still think it is a .56 Colt revolving rifle?

    Another interesting bullet--HELP!

This bullet measures out to be a thin hair over .54, and is sitting next to a Sharps .54 for a comparison. There are 7 large marks that I suspect are rifleing marks, but I do not know that for sure. The base is solid, and that is what really is throwing me off. Were rifeling grooves ever that...

    Recent Enfield Finds

These are my new Enfields. They appear to be a .60 cal, two .557 and a .54, as near as my micrometer can determine. Would these be correct? Is there anything significant about the .60 and the .54? The .60 has a huge cavity (I think the .54 would fit into it if it were round) and outrageously...

    New Georgia finds

Here are the finds from spending a week in Georgia. I was lucky in obtaining permission to hunt an area in front of the Confederate trenches, permission that has not been given in living memory. This increases my lifetime finds by a factor of 4! I have a couple of odd bullets that I will...

    P.C. George: Help!

We stopped by an antique store the other day. He had what seemed to be a 12 pdr (I did not have calipers or scales, next time is different!) that looked pretty good but it seemed slightly off round. Can a good hit do that to a ball? Then he had a stack of other small ones, possibly sixes or...

    Found bullets

Well, sorta found. Went to an antiques store in Colorado hoping for some treasure and found these: a .32 teatfire and a 7mm pin fire. I pretty much hate buying things, but this is my only option right now. So, at $15 for the 7mm and $50 for the .32, did I do well, or am I in my normal mode...

    Information on "buck and Ball"

A couple of questions for the experts, regarding buck and ball. The first is, how was it loaded, buck first or ball first? Or did it matter? It seems that because of being heavier, the buck would have more momentum and the balls falling away first. If the ball went out first, could it...

    A simple question (?)

I just purchased a 12 lb. ball and want to put it on an oak stand with a informational plaque. Is there something more interesting to say about it than "12 lb. Solid Shot"? I will, of course, add the battlefield and dates.

What do you think? Part II

Do I have a fragment of a Hotchkiss? Your opinion is appreciated. Photo is pg. 223 of "Civil War Relics of the Western Campaign". It doesn't seem to have enough curvature to be a ball.

What do you think? Part I

The size is similar, shape is similar, knob is there, but perhaps left end is broken. From 'Civil War Relics of the Western Campaign" pg. 72

    Canister Contents?

Hi--According to a chart I was given, the mountain howitzer canister shot was supposed to have .69 lead balls. But ones that I found are a maxinum of .649 and mostly a little less. My detector shop owner found (from a Colorado indian battle) about 2/3s of a cannon ball, fuse, load balls, etc...

    For cwbullet---tool, pin, or what?

Here is a couple of more photos as you requested. It appears that the point is broken off, but it is only a small bit. What do you think? Should I take a steel brush to it and clean it up a little?

    Shell Fragments & Tool????

Hi--I am hoping that these are shell fragments. The large measures .598 in. thick, the smaller one is .60 and the pointy one is .44 in. The measurements are rough, and the two smaller ones seem to taper down a bit. Measurements were made on the big end and the two smaller pieces show some...

    .30 cal bullet

I know it is not CW, in fact it was found in a buffalo wallow in Colorado. But I know that someone will know what it is. It is .30 cal, and it's length is .78 in., although it is slightly flattened. Probably at least .8 in. length undamaged. The bottom is flat. Any takers? Thanks

    A little button help?

There are 12 stars around the border, and then 3 spheres under the anchor. Is this the "fouled anchor" motif? The back is completely rusted and gone. The head if facing right. After an ID, I will surprise you with the find location.

    How did this happen?

Just found this site, and I enlisted for 90 days. Now after looking through the whole board, I still have no idea about this. I found all four pieces within a 18 in. square area. I don't think it is a "shattered" bullet as there seem to be a number of round, melted areas and not really broken...
