A fellow I know in Australia sends me this looking for good, scholarly sources...

I am also writing papers on Stonewall Jacksons first campaign in the Shenandoah Valley - why it is still regarded as relevent to later generations of military leaders and another one relating to the problems confronting Lincoln in getting the Union organized to fight.

any recomendations?

A good book to read is Stonewall by Byron Farwell. It is a fairly unbiased look at Stonewall Jackson and goes so far as to say Jackson was often "lucky" in his campaigns. However, I feel that it was Jackson's strict military discipline that lead to his greatness and his willingness to take some risks. Anyway tell him to look for that book. After reading that book though my opinion of him changed, slightly.

Another good book is "Stonewall Jackson, Portrait of a Soldier" by John Tower. It deals with the character of the man as well as his campaigns and battles.
