Buckle ID

I have seen these sold as buckles but, I have been told by relic dealers whom I trust that they are covers for harness buckles.
They are found on Civil War sites.

First... Mihael, I got an email notification that you'd tried to send me a Private Message -- but my PM box was full. I've now cleared some space there, so please try again. Or, you can contact me more directly by sending me an email.horsegear_buckle-shield_patented1879.jpghorsegear_buckle-shield_1879-patent-diagram.jpg

What Tbuckley has been told by "knowledgable" relic dealers is correct. Those "buckles" are in actual fact a horse-harness buckle shield, also called a buckle cover. Check the attached photo, and the attached 1879 US Patent diagram.

Like the one in the photo, many have no emblem or design on them, but their basic shape is essentially the same. Some have a raised heart or other emblem on them. Those can be found in the Sears-&-Roebuck mail order catalogs from the late 1880s to 1920.

Unfortunately, being found at a civil war site does not mean something is from the civil war. I know that's sometimes hard to accept... but to believe otherwise means we must also accept that the Confederates were using Model-T Ford parts, and the yankee soldiers were being paid with Lincoln pennies in 1861-65.

Regards,
Pete
