Hi Gang,

A friend of mine asked me to post this. Pretty sure it's not Civil War era, most likely earlier. Not even sure if it's military.

It's 0.6 inch in diameter, has no writing on the back, the letters T * L under a crown and the letter V at the bottom.

Any help is appreciated. THX.

hey rodney,
my guess is that your button is a british 1812 regimental button. it's a one piece and you can see the mold markings in the back where it was cast, very primitive.
i dont know the specifics but it predates the Civil War by far. nice button.

Hi Cara,

Thanks for the input. So, it's British and regimental. Makes sense due to the crown.

There's a listing for Tarleton's Legion in the archives which would account for the T * L but I cannot find a photo of their uniform buttons.

Have any idea where to get a photo ?

Thanks.

Rodney

Rodney,
Doing a little research in the "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" book. Found a button that kind of resembles your button. Found it under "Buttons of the Loyalists Corps" but this button is a NY V with crown on top same as yours. The crown is diffenitely British and it states that this button is a New York Volunteer, Private button. It also states that more than 20,000 residents of New York and neighboring States were recruited into the British army and served in distinctive military organizations.
Question is, what does TL stand for? Tarletons Legion??? You may be right on that Rodney. But I think the V stands for volunteer and I think the button was served under a similar fashioned as the New York button. That is all I could find. Hope this little information helps out. Take care buddy!

Hi KCSteve !

Thanks for the input and the effort in looking this one up.

You're on the right track and what you've offered helps confirm other findings: that this is British loyalist, either English or Irish militia (volunteers).

Learned that Tarleton's Legion was a British legion officially, which meant that they carried standard insignia. It was a script L as shown on their flags. No T and L as I had hoped.

Appreciate the help !
