Cahaba Iron Works finds

Hi,

I found these pig iron bars in my mother's friend's backyard in Cahaba, Alabama (near Birmingham). Her property backs up to the old iron works that was burned by Wilson's Raiders in 1864. The W.S. McE stands for the owner Wallace Scott McElwain. These bars would have been loaded onto wagons bound for Selma Arsenal. Remains of the old iron works and the trail to Selma can be seen to this day.

Iron Works

You said you can still see the trail from this plant. Is there any of the old U-Rail left anywhere? Bear

I do recall seeing some rails out there. If I get a chance to go back, I will see if I can take some pictures. The city is making some kind of park out of the place, so it may all eventually be lost to history. :(

If you can get some of the U-Rail without getting into trouble you should get it. I know around here it is hard to find. The only place we can get it around here is to dive the river for it. Bear
