Confederate Buttons

Aloha All,

I've been trying to positively ID two (2) Confederate Cast Staff Buttons, but I don't have access to an Albert's or Tice's here in Hawaii. These are buttons I received from my Grandfather over 40 years ago, and he got them from a family 'Rebel' when he was a boy in Kansas at the turn of the century.

The other two are aparently Staff Buttons, but take a good look at one of them. I put them both in one scan for comparison. They are both 22.5mm, cast, with a good shank, have a droop eagle & 11 stars. One is 'Normal', and the other one is double-cast. The eagle goes up and down, the stars are superimposed. It looks as though it was cast, and then re-cast.

One is a 'Normal' 11 star Staff Button, good solid shank, and decent shine for its age. The other one is slightly larger due to the double casting. It is a little heavier, has a fatter belly, and thicker rim, though the diameter remained the same. It has an identical shank and back, but you can probably see the thicker rim in the scan when you compare them.

He also gave me (1) 24mm cast Block I (CS184A/CSI275A1) It is deep brown in color, has no back, a good solid shank and no visible markings.

And finally (1) 21mm CSA cast Confed. Local (CS86/CSG210AI) It is bronze in color, shows just a little gilt peeking through, and a clear C.S.A. on it. I am hesitant to clean it with anything other than soap & water. It also has a good solid shank.

Any thoughts on the Staff Buttons?

Thanks

Craig

I spun the buttons around on the first and second views above.

Here's the reverse, anyone think I should clean up the CSA button?

None of these are dug, they're just old and dirty.

Tom,

Do you think you friend might be interested in being a expert in the field of buttons for us?
