Construction clearing present on a day off...

Hey all. I'm starting to really like this one construction site I have been visiting. Today, I decided to head out there for a little bit. 70 degrees and a Friday off, what else could I do?

We had 1 1/2" of rain yesterday and the day before, and the place was a complete muddy mess. My boots are definitely trashed and I've got mud halfway up my detector.

I made my way to the back corner near a dozer pile. I thought it might be a little dryer there as that part of the clearing is the highest point in the lot. I started at the pile and worked my way back towards the center of the lot, down the slope. About 20 feet from the pile I got that awesome strong 3 foot diameter signal. Hummm, I thought either tin sheet piece, beer can, license plate (another story...). I was wrong.

This plate was only about 3" down, but the ground had been scraped about 4" already. As I cleared away the muddy mess trying to center the signal, the "US" popped out and looked me right in the face. Flipping it over while holding my breath (hook anticipation), I carefully wiped the mud away to find not only all 3 hooks perfectly intact, but a huge piece of leather still attached. I credit the position of the buckle (face up) and the higher elevation of that spot to its condition. The hooks aren't even rusty, not one bit. Could they be brass too? This is only the second waist plate I have dug. The first was a nice US as well, but that one had the round hooks, not the arrow hooks, and some of the lead was missing.

I sold the first one so that I could pay off my detector. I swore that if I dug another it would never be sold. It took a year, but I have one now, and its not going anywhere.

Darn the construction, but thanks for the clearing!

Shack,
thats an unbelievable find, me and the boys were out there a couple weeks ago and about 10 others were working the site also. It was cold, miserable but it just goes to show that you never get it all and persistence pays off esp in a junky site you cant discount any signal. Keep it up

PS
Let me borrow your rabbits foot for tomorrows dig

Pile

Dave:

I MD'd that exact same spot two weeks ago, with 3 other MD'ers out there too. I got the mother lode signal, dug practically a pit to find a 1951 antique VA license plate..... Not to happy...

When I drove past the site yesterday, I noticed the pile of dirt and trees/stumps, so I figured what the heck... Amazing how much stuff you can walk right past. I also think grading the surface helps out alot, but you've gotta get there before they level it down a few feet.

I'm pretty pumped about tomorrow, guess we'll have to wait and see how it pans out.

I have only one rabbits foot, but I do have a cat that I am trying to get rid of. I've been told with a little dye you can't tell the difference!

See ya at 7am.

wow

shack,
I really enjoyed the photos of the buckle. Can't believe that part of the leather is still attached. Neat.

Thanks, I thought the leather was pretty cool too. I think the best part is that the buckle still has that curved shape, all the lead and hooks are there, and the face has very little ground action.

I'm tempted to clean it up some more. One collector told me to use a pin to gently remove the dirt from the edge. I just don't want to scratch the face at all, so I'm still thinking about it...

Also, anyone out there know what I could put on the leather to help keep it moist? Its been in the ground 143 years, I've had it out of the ground for about two weeks now, and the leather is already drying out...
