I recently spotted an abandoned lot near a CW campsite dating to 1780s and frequented by GW. I used the county GIS website to find the owner and ask for permission to hunt via Jim Vokes Letter format. As this is a visible spot I knew I would be challenged soon after arrival, less than 2 minutes as it turned out. The owner of the property next door (a 1785 house used during CW as a hospital still has cannon ball holes in the brick walls -owned by former Mayor of the town) drove up and told me it was private property. I immediately broke out my permission letter and the former mayor said well if you know Mr ??? then let me tell you about this lot, etc , etc. His father in law 91 yrs old (town historian for 40 yrs) 2 doors down walked up and proceeeded to give me several booklets he had written on town history and a site from the CW that I didnt know about to hunt. After our nice visit, the mayor told me to give him my card after the holiday and he would put me in touch w/ a buddy of his that is a local and hunts F'burg/Chancellorsville to give me some other sites to hit. The moral of this story is that if I had been tresspassing I would have had the cops called on me vice meeting an influential member of the town and getting some new leads for promising and little know areas to hunt.

Yep, that's the way to do it Dave!!! I've learned that if you develop a good talking relationship with owners and adjacent property owners, doors will open up like you wouldn't believe. Good job!

Hey Bama Dave,

Can you send me over a copy of the Jim Vokes letter ? I've got one that the local relic club uses but yours may be better. THX !

Hey guys, 65 and sunny in Georgia today. Fresh rain last night should activate those relics. So, I'll kiss the wife goodbye and head out on the property.

Good hunting today !

Rodney
