Had the pleasure of hunting again yesterday with a new digging pardner near Oxford, MS. This was the first time I'd been back to this site in 10 years. Aside from about 4 pounds of junk iron and melted lead, the photo shows the results of a 3 hour hunt. I really like the Starr carbine bullets and piece of 12 lb. shrapnel with a portion of the borman fuse hole. And the cuff Eagle I button has a fair amount of gilt on it. My pardner found a dropped .58 3-ring and iron cannister ball (probably 12 lb. size). The property owner will allow us to hunt it one more time before deer hunting (gun) starts in two weeks. There's always something left to dig!

I have dug memorable quantities of Starr bullets at only two sites: Oxford, MS, and Richmond Hill, GA. Some of the ones from Richmond Hill were cut up by plows to some degree. The ones from Oxford are usually good specimens.

I handled a fair number of Starr carbine bullets over the years. Some are like the one pictured in MM. The ones from the Oxford area are a bit different from many of the others. They are #580 (on page 254 of ROUND BALL TO RIMFIRE PART TWO), cast with flat base. The Starr's with the small cone cavity in the base seem less common than those with the flat base.

Always liked the ones from Arkansas which had slender base rims and seemed shorter than the others. Wondered where they were produced. Maybe St. Louis...just a guess.

Oh, well, it's always good to dig something CW. Had hoped to go back to Oxford this weekend, but deer (gun) season opens tomorrow and the landowner does not want us to return until it's over (January). Guess we'll have more 12th GA buttons and modern lead bullets to find then!
