PC vs. Historically accurate
I'm a Yankee (south of Boston, MA) who has had the distinct pleasure of living in the South (Houston, TX) for about a decade, and find myself attracted to and sharing views of both sides of the conflict. I am also a strong believer in preserving the truth of history and avoiding the current "revisionist" movements.
As such, I find myself becoming increasingly disturbed over the current trend to misrepresent the events and motivations of the civil war and the view that those of us who study the conflict do so in an attempt to preserve racist attitudes and restore the institution of slavery. Recent noteable headlines have included:
Numerous legal battles over the display of the Confederate Battle Flag (Americans died fighting for this flag and it did not become a racist icon until well after the war)
The growing trend within the museum community (especially the Smithsonian) to downplay the importance of the CW and remove all displays associated with firearms and weapons.
The recent announcement that the new visitor center at Gettysburg will present Slavery as the primary cause of the CW, in an attempt to attract a more racially diverse group of visitors. (What happened to "The Cause" and States Rights?)
And, most concerning to me, the statements made by high ranking members of the NPS regarding the downplaying of the significance of battles and the conversion of the major CW parks to "a nice place for a family to go for a picnic".
To paraphrase Shelby Foote, the major result of the CW was to produce the America that exists today, a country where an event like that could never happen again. To misrepresent the causes, events and icons of that struggle serves only to diminish the pride, dedication and courage of the combatants, the very attributes that represent the America that we are dedicated to.
I'll get off my soapbox now, sorry for the rant but this subject greatly concerns me. As JimT said in a recent conversation "I would rather be historically accurate than politically correct".
