Return To Good Old USA!!!!!

Chuck,
It must have been a Very good feeling  to catch a Hacker before the fact this time!!!!! and a Greater Feeling :up to know when you will be returning home!!!!! I would like for anyone associated with this Forum to be able to meet somewhere within reason and Chat in person and do some digging together.....I've had the priviledge to meet Gary (PIA) and Tom Stelma in person, but other CWB members are just images within my mind......
After you return home and get settled, maybe You and other members can think about a CWB Reunion (IN PERSON)? Just a thought?

Thanks For All The Good Work!!!! Roger (war-war-digger)

Chuck,
Am I correct in assuming you are in the service? If so, what branch? I am a retired Marine.

Welcome back home. Its always good to be back on US soil.

Service

I am in the Army. I have been in now for 5 years and am 35. Rank: CPT - hopefully foon will make Major. I start FP residency in July if Sadam doe sno interfere.

Chuck

Well Captain, I pray he does not interfere with your return. I was in his last little war and hope that no more of our men have to go to this one. After all, we aren't interested in collecting those kind of bullets are we? The only thing I brought home from there was an Iraqi field phone(I was in communications).
Hurry on home now, ya hear

Ron,

I have to say that it is a different Armed Forces now. Your days were much better.

I am ashamed at times at how laxed it has become. Today, if you get caught breaking the rules, you don't always spend time behind bars.

For instance, drugs. I have seen many a soldier and officer get caught using drugs. Now, you spend a few months in CCC and then you are back to work. It is sad. We need to kick em out and have spend a few months in a labor camp.

Chuck

Chuck,
I fear that that is a result of the liberal infection that has spread across this great nation for the past 10 years. I agree that violaters should be dealt with harshly with a no tolerance policy. Amazing that sports such as the olympics have a no tolerance policy but the Armed Forces do not. On a similiar note, Congressman Gephardt of Missouri has called his cronies in the Govenor's office and had the Confederate flags that have flown over the state historical sites at the Confederate Memorial Home in Higgensville MO and the site of Fort Davidson in Pilot Knob (my home area), removed. All it took was a phone call from him. Amazing what power the king has. I have resigned as Vice President of Friends of Fort Davidson group as I cannot tolerate the thoughts that Department Of Natural Resources agreeing with Gephardt's thoughts that the flag is "hateful and divisive".

Sorry, did not mean to get political, and if you choose not to leave this on the forum, I will certainly understand.
Ron

Chuck,
What is the FP internship you refered to? As to the other posts concerning the flag display, the folks who desire to elimate Confederate flags WANT people to give up the desire to show the colors. Resigning only furthers their cause. No offence intended...I know how you feel.

By the way, I think that Chuck's return to the US is a bad thing. What we DO NOT need here is another good military preservationist!

Confusion.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I am just upset because one of my collegues got off for smoking pot and not I have to review all his charts. I think a Doc and officer in the Army should have live by a higher standard. I do not even drink alcohol within 48 hours of a shift (which is rare even with 30 days of a shift).

As for flags, I understand both sides because I have to, but I am very much against destruction of historical items and hiding them in the closet. I understand anyone who might feel the conferate flag is racist symbol because it has often used in that respect, but I also see that there is no difference between someone think I am a racist because I ahev a rebel flag and someone else assuming a man dressed like he come from the "hood" is a crook. Both are stereotypes and wrong.

Gary, Ia m sorry you wont be glad to see me back. I am hoping to make a couple western shows next year.

Chuck

Chuck,
I certainly understand both sides of the flag issue as well, but this case was a little different. There had been no complaints here in Missouri concerning these flags. Gephardt was in SC campaigning for Pres. and was putting them down for flying the flag when someone asked him why he wasnt complaining about the flags in his state. He immediately made the call to the govenor's office and down they came(the govenor is a former Gephardt aide). Both of these sites fly the Confederate flag because they both have Confederate dead buried there. Here at Fort Davidson it is a common grave containing both union and Confederate remains(about 500). I do not agree with "in your face" displays of the flag or its use by racist groups. They are a big part of this problem. The site here did not fly the battle flag, but the 2nd National flag. The staff here was helpless although I don't think they agree with the decision. They are all good friends of mine. The Director of this site is very pro union(did his Master's thesis on Ewing) but believes in both sides being presented properly. I volunteer when school groups come thru to go up and dress as a civil war soldier and show the weapons and equipment. I dress out as both a union and confederate soldier. I can't see how I can support the decision made by the state director who considers the flag a hateful symbol when properly display at a civil war musuem/memorial site

Sorry to ramble on again. I'm really NOT a political person, but I grew up playing around the earthworks here and my ancestor fought here so I consider this place sacred.
Ron

I agree.

That is basically what I was saying. It bothers me that there are so many hipocrits around. I can't stand racism. I am white and have seen racism against me and for me and both stink. When applying to medical school, I was rejected at first and saw both women and minorities get in with lower gpa and mcat scores. It was frustrating.

I have also seen people "open doors" for me just because I am white - example: invitation to dinners or country clubs.

It bothers me. Thanks for the posts. They bring up a good discussion.

PC vs. Historically accurate

I'm a Yankee (south of Boston, MA) who has had the distinct pleasure of living in the South (Houston, TX) for about a decade, and find myself attracted to and sharing views of both sides of the conflict. I am also a strong believer in preserving the truth of history and avoiding the current "revisionist" movements.
As such, I find myself becoming increasingly disturbed over the current trend to misrepresent the events and motivations of the civil war and the view that those of us who study the conflict do so in an attempt to preserve racist attitudes and restore the institution of slavery. Recent noteable headlines have included:

Numerous legal battles over the display of the Confederate Battle Flag (Americans died fighting for this flag and it did not become a racist icon until well after the war)

The growing trend within the museum community (especially the Smithsonian) to downplay the importance of the CW and remove all displays associated with firearms and weapons.

The recent announcement that the new visitor center at Gettysburg will present Slavery as the primary cause of the CW, in an attempt to attract a more racially diverse group of visitors. (What happened to "The Cause" and States Rights?)

And, most concerning to me, the statements made by high ranking members of the NPS regarding the downplaying of the significance of battles and the conversion of the major CW parks to "a nice place for a family to go for a picnic".

To paraphrase Shelby Foote, the major result of the CW was to produce the America that exists today, a country where an event like that could never happen again. To misrepresent the causes, events and icons of that struggle serves only to diminish the pride, dedication and courage of the combatants, the very attributes that represent the America that we are dedicated to.

I'll get off my soapbox now, sorry for the rant but this subject greatly concerns me. As JimT said in a recent conversation "I would rather be historically accurate than politically correct".

TomH

Chuck,
Just covering bases here. I hope that you and everyone else realize that I was joking about your return to the States.
Gary

Tom,

That was very well stated. I would have to agree on your points. It seems the NPS wants to attract more visitors. Lets hope our historic monuments and battlefields don't become Disney World!
