How do you authenticate a weapon?

I saw a “Civil War Shotgun” at antique store, but I am not positive it is authentic and want to be sure before I drop $300. Can someone give me a few hints as to what I should look for to confirm it is legitimate? Thank you

GoCaps,

There really weren't any official CW shotguns. Those used were privately owned weapons and most were fowling guns or converted single barrel .69 cal muskets. Unless there is a written provenance linking the weapon to a CW soldier, there is no way to determine if a weapon of the proper age even was used.

If you can send me some photos privately at tomh@baymediapro.com I can see if I can help ID the maker and timeframe.

BTW: Washington Caps? If do, you have my sympathies <grin>.

Later,
TomH
