Metal Detecting Sources

Yes I was just curious if any of ya'll experts could help me find some sources for some of my research, I am stuck in a rut right now in finding good sites to go. I use the Official Records of the Civil War and cross reference them with old and new maps to find spots, but most the places I find have already been hunted heavily or inaccessible. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I hunt heavily hunted spots too. I just hunt them real slow and I crawl, stomp and cut my way through brush no one else will. Ive found my best things in those heavy hunted area.

Other sources......

can include going to local libraries that do not have online information but LOTS of print info. Look for locally written history books such as by the local historical society, copies of a Civil War soldier's diary or journal can be invaluable in locating little known camps. Many books have been written about different campaigns or specific regiments. Many times these books have references to camps or other sites not mentioned in the OR's. Lastly, if you are lucky enough to find one whose willing to do so, talk to some "old timers" that metal detected years ago, but are no longer interested or able to go. Take the time to talk to these guys and ask for information. Just recently I received GREAT info from an experienced relic hunter who no longer hunts in my area but used to do so. Since he doesn't hunt this area anymore, he was more than willing to help. The OR's are a great source, don't get me wrong. But if that is your ONLY source, you are certainly missing out on some nice sites. Good luck!

I'm not very experienced, but i would suggest searching for soldiers diaries that are being put on the Internet. Ive found (in a few cases) that the diary can pinpoint locations when used in conjunction with the OR's. But, I'm not very good at this so take it for what its worth. Just a suggestion.
