Nautilus Metal Detectors?

Yes, as much as it pains me to write this, I have decided to yet again purchase another metal detector. First let me explain some history...
I started with a Fisher 1236-x2 and this was one awesome detector, the depth wasn't quite deep enough, but I really enjoyed it. I decided to sell it and upgrade detectors so I bought a White's DFX (at a very good deal) I used this detector for some time as was unsatisfied by the performance, so I gave it too my wife to use (which she rarely ever uses). I then bought a Minelab Sovereign Elite (instead of a Fisher 1270 like I had been wanting) due too the many good reviews that I read about them online. I have had it now for about six months and am also not satisfied with it's performance as well. Now don't get me wrong it's a good machine but it's just not up to par. I am starting to get really discouraged about finding a good machine. I just wanted to see what everyone else had to say. The debate now is between a Nautilus DMC 2-BA and a Fisher 1270. My gut tells me to go with the Fisher 1270 as I have dealt with Fisher in the past and it has been one of the only companies that I have been satisfied with. So I guess I really just wanted to see what every bodies thoughts are on the Nautilus as I know how the Fisher performs. Thanks for your time and as always any input is appreciated.

P.S. I have a Whites DFX and a Minelab Sovereign Elite for sale if anyone is interested. :D

I had a Tesoro Tejon with the larger coil and got rid of it. The drift was terrible and almost made it unusable.

I have a Nautilus DMC !!B and find it to do well, depth wise. I like the dual mode so you can hear the lower all metal signal as well as a high pitched beep on good signals. I don't particularly like the balance of the unit.

My favorite machine is the White's MXT. It has a relic mode that uses the dual mode like the Nautilus. The balance is much better than the Nautilus. I also use a Sun Ray in line pinpointer on it, which isn't available for the Nautilus. I keep the Nautilus as a back up machine and primarily use the MXT. The rap I hear on Fisher machines is they like iron, meaning it's harder to discriminate out nails. The MXT does a decent job with iron.

I find the dual mode helpful in making a decision on whether to dig iffy signals. You can hear both at the same time, without switching back and forth. Saves time.

If you like the Fisher and know how they work go with the 1270! I have been using the 1270 for about 7 years now and really really like it. It is a great button machine and has produced a lot of lead for me as well!
But, I, like you, am up for a new machine by X-mas, I hope! I recently hunted with a group of guys and they all used the Nautilus IIBA. I was greatly impressed by those machines and I will probably buy a Nautilus based on what I saw. I will NOT, EVER, get rid of my Fisher though!!!! And it would be my primary hunting machine! There are going to be those times when the Fisher will be a better machine to hunt with, than the Nautilus. As with every machine, they may work well in one condition but not so great in another!

What ever you get, use the hell out of it and learn what it's saying to you. Especially learn the sounds of faint, iffy deep signals. If in doubt, dig it.

Which detector did you choose? I know this thread is over a year old, but I just got a Nautilus DMC II, hear the DMC IIb is deeper, but I am happy with this machine for what I paid for it.

It's just luck that I checked this today, first time in ages. The Nautilus's are great detectors-some of the best! They just are not for me they are super deep prolly some of the deepest I have ever used, but depth isn't everything. I now use a tesoro tejon and its the best detector for MS ground conditions that I have used. I can always find relics at hunted out campsites. My partner uses a 1270 and he swears by it. Everybody swears by there favorite detectors but its all about what you are comfortable with. Like Jimmy K told me a long time ago pick a detector and use the crap out of it know its insides and outs every detector has its own language and you have to decide what its telling you. If in doubt always dig. I hope this helps and good luck man- e-mail me if ya need anything else bud.

Hi,

I have read alot of favorable write ups about the Tesoro Tejon. I read alot over at the Treasure Depot website and I think alot of them use that machine. I got into detecting in 2001, had a used Garrett Groundhog for a few weeks then bought a Minelab Sovereign, which is my favorite machine, think cause I used it so much I got to reconginze all those noises. Sold that, had a Whites IDX with mr bills mods, had a Minelab Advantage, Tesoro EuroSabre and a Tesoro Tiger Shark which I tried out once underwater. Oh and a Whites Quantum. All pretty good machines, maybe when I get use to this Nautilus will be too. But if I ever find a good price on a used Minelab Sovereign XS I will buy and keep as my detector.

The Tejon I think would be great because of the lightweightness of if you are swinging all day. The Sov does get kinda heavy after a few hours for me, especially with meter. Also I from reports I have read on them, the Tejon is plenty deep. The EuroSabre just couldnt get that deep. The Advantage seemed pretty good, but I was so use to the multi sounds of the Sov I kept holding it up to that. I coinshoot too and with the Sov that helped out.

Im using an 8" coil on my Nautilus, I might get a bigger coil for depth. This part of TN seems to have alot of clay in places, hard to dig, so alot of targets dont sink as deep as maybe west part of Tennessee does.

I think your right in getting to know your detector, whatever brand/model you choose. Maybe one of my problems, like a kid in a candy store, wanting to try them all, but not being an expert on any one.
