Need help putting value on collection

WS1864

A friend's mother found this collection while cleaning out Grampa's cabin. It appears to be a CW veteran's personal collection of relics. They have no idea where it came from, but they think it may have belonged to an ancestor.

They need money and want to sell it, and they've asked me to find out how much it's worth. I'd appreciate any guidance folks can offer.

The collection is in a wooden box with a glass front and hinged lid. It contains a hand written list by the original owner describing its contents. They are:

  • “Confederate flag” - small hand-made first national, silk. Rolled up on stick, left side of case.
  • “Knife used during the war of 1861-1865” - Folding pocket knife, directly behind pistol, left side of case. Marked “I – XL George Wostenholms Celebrated Cuttlery”
  • “War Map of 1861” - 'Gibson and CO's Pocket Map of the Seat of War in Missouri.' Published in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • “Badge of 2d Brig. 2d Div, 4th Corps.” - Triangular badge, lower left corner of case. Appears to be silver.
  • “Button from Soldiers coat” - Union Army coat button.
  • “Part of shell thrown in the battle of Nashville (This is directly under the butt of the revolver.)”
  • “Revolver captured in Kentucky” - *I think* is a Confederate built Colt 1862 .36 police model. Serial number 12068, all matching. Backstrap appears to be silver plated brass.
  • “Sleeve-buttons made in Confederate prison” - Pair of white buttons directly beneath pistol trigger guard.
  • “Lincoln badges (first and second terms)” - From the 1860 and 1864 elections. 1860 medal has photo of beardless Lincoln on front and Hamilton on reverse.
  • “Confederate cartridges” - Box of six .36 paper patch pistol cartridges, made in Richmond, VA.
  • “Grain of powder used in mortars on the Mississippi river”
  • “Butternut badge made and worn by a Copperhead during the war for the Union.”
  • “Indian arrowhead”
  • “Soldiers housewife used during the war for the Union” - Contains original items including: needles, numerous buttons, pencil, newspaper clipping, hooks and eyes, darning cloth, large packet of sewing pins, spare ink pen nibs, name tags to be sewn in clothing, and a scrap of paper with a hand written address in Bainbridge, Ohio.
  • “Dime found on a dead Indian during an Indian war in the west.” - Appears to be missing from collection.
  • “Part of old Fort Duquesne.” - French fort founded in 1754 in what is now downtown Pittsburgh. I think it's the rock just below the tip of the pistol barrel.
Other items in the collection not listed by owner:
  • Ticket stub for the Wiggens Ferry. Located inside housewife (may be his 'ticket home?')
  • A piece of cut white crystal
  • A ladies purple polka-dot handkerchief.
  • A second butternut badge
