:wh Hello Everyone, I am the new kid on the block here. In fact I am NEW to this whole hunting aspect ! I think I have an area that I can hunt out not far from the Pittsburg Landing. I am needing an old map of the area ( land, and water) from the 1860's era. Being totaly new to this I am lost as to where to even find such. I have a current map to which to compare to help identify the area. Thank You for ANY help. John Foerg Muscle Shoals Alabama jfoerg@hotmail.com

Welcome to the Civil War Bullet forums, Johnboy. I'm one of the oldtimers who hang around to help answer newcomers' questions. (Way back when I was new to digging civil war relics, some oldtimers were very helpful to me.)

The most "readily available" source for the map you want (Pittsburg Landing/Shiloh, land & water) is the massive book "Atlas to Accompany The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" ...which we relic-diggers commonly call simply "the Official Records Atlas". I know for certain that it contains several very detailed maps of the Pittsburg Landing / Shiloh battlefield (including the river and the land).

The Official Records Atlas book has been reprinted many times, and can nowadays be purchased from various civil war book-dealers in either book form or on a CD. You'll find both the book and the CD for sale on Ebay.

However, in doing a Websearch for you, I discovered that all the maps in the Official Records Atlas book can be viewed online, at:
http://ehistory.osu.edu/osu/sources/rec ... plates.cfm

Important Note... that site's online maps include a "Zoom" function, to greatly enlarge any section of a map.

Thank You so very much for the help Mr. Pete. I do appreciate your effort to help this new untrained rookie. Maybe something good will come out of this for both of us  . John Foerg

Hey John,
Thanks for posting this! I'm a seasoned digger (12 year next month) and also live and dig close to Pittsburg Landing! Maybe we can hook-up some time and swing? Maybe I can assist with the in the field training aspect?
Mr Pete, thanks for the online link to the CW Atlas. I have it in book form and it is very big and bulky!

Thanks To You Both,
Happy Collecting, Good Luck, Roger
