question about civil war coins

I have a question that I'm not sure about. While digging with rebel digger(and not having much luck) I began to think out loud about what type of coins the south used during the war. I know they had paper money but I have never seen a rebel coin. You hear stories of how the southerners buried the money around their homes and a metal detector doesn't pick up paper well. Did the south use coins after succeeding from the union. This is like now when I give my kids a dollar for a pack of gum and would you believe it the pack must have cost a dollar because I never get any change back. Can some one answer this one?
