Round iron buckle

I also found this buckle. Looks like a period buckle but its rather large and round. Its 3 inches in diameter and made of iron. Does anyone know what it could belong to?

I think you might have half of a loose ring snaffle bit. This could be period but is still used today. This is called a "watering bit" in the Regulations of 1861.

I agree..... half of a loose ring snaffle/watering bit. I have found several in fairly strict context to CW camps, etc. But as you said they are still in use to some extent today.
