Sabot ID Request

I found this piece of sabot in the same general area that I found my hotchkiss shell yesterday. It appears to be made of either brass, copper, or bronze..I'm not sure which. I have found a similar piece last year but not as big as this one. I know it is a sabot, but the notches throw me. It does have rifling on the outside of the ring. Thanks for all of your help in advance.

Ron,

It looks to be a Burton sabot right now. That would be pretty rare. I have to do much more research on it. I may need to get some precise measurements from you. Will get on it as soon as I can.

Ron,

After ckecking the books, I believe you have a Federal Type 2 Parrott sabot. This type was made in a real variety of shapes and thicknesses. It does look similar to a Burton sabot but the Parrott has more of the rectangular cuts on the inside. The Burton is found almost exclusively in northern Va.

On the Parrott shell, bolt or case the sabot was cast around the base of the shell. The rectangular notches were an attempt to keep the sabot from flying off during firing.

Thanks Craig...as you probably have figured out, this was found here in SE Missouri on the side of a mountain that confederate troops advanced from while attempting to dislodge federals from Fort Davidson. This was in Sept 1864 during Price's Missouri raid. The federals had a multitude of different size artillery at their disposal. What I find the most of on my hunts are 24 and 32 lb fragments and the round lead balls that filled them. I also find minies that were both dropped and fired on the skirmish lines. And have also found several grapeshots.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
