Sunday's RSR hunt

Sunday was our First Red Stick Raiders Club Hunt of the year. I was unable to attend because I was ill, go figure. Nine of my twenty-three guys made the long trek to Port Hudson. We were hunting a VERY hunted area and I suspected that there would be a few members that would find nothing. We gave two awards, BEST FIND and MOST FINDS... both of them won by Wayne Landry. Since I was unable to attend, our Hunt Coordinator, Daniel Welch (DW), and our Vice President, Chris Langlois, spearheaded the event and performed my duties very well.

Wayne found a perfect dropped .54 CSA and four pistol balls. Also, he added a bunch of shell and cannon ball shrapnel to his pile and a trigger (?)<---- they are not sure of this, it's just a guess.

Fonz (a member of this forum as BRDAVE) found a .36 pistol ball and so did Randy.

The other members found some knick knacks, square nails, shrapnel pieces, and modern bullets. Everyone had a good time, though. We will do it again next weekend. Hope you enjoy the pics.

In this pic the guys are perched on the embankment of one of the rifle pits that run through the fourty acres.

1st row: Ken Edds, Daniel Welch (DW), David Alphonso (Fonz), Ron Dawson.

2nd row: Darryl Buzzbin, Chris Langlois, Randy Dugas, Glen Lee.

Wayne Landry is taking the pic.

Sounds like everyone had a great time. I always enjoy being out in the woods even if my detector does not find anything. What kind of .54 CSA bullet was dug?

i look buff in those pics, lol. We had a blast. I't was disapointing that our fearless leader could not make it,we had lots of fun without him. The day was a perfect day to be out there in gods country.

MM430? I have never heard of any of those being found out here in the West. CS salvaged lead bullets turn up mainly in the East. Can y'all provide pictures?

Gary

Yes, I will be able to, but it will be a while before I can get my hands on the bullet. It is probably just the ground conditions that made the bullet look crude like that.

I have never personally held a salvaged bullet to compare with.

As you probably know the salvaged lead bullets ae found in both .54 and .577/.58 calibers. The toree grooves are shallow and rounded. Plug base type cavity. Attached is a picture or two.

I was having problems with macro pics, I found that a tripod can help steady the camera alot

Thanks for the suggestion. Getting old, it seems, and my parts don't work as well as they used to!
