TIN/IRON? CS BLOCK I BUTTON

Here's one for you button diggers.

RAWWAR has an oddity which needs comments on. I'm not sure if it is a two piece or cast one piece button. The back is pretty much flat except for an area close to the center that has a pit indicating where it could have been broken off. The artifact was found at Fallen Timbers (near Shiloh, TN) years ago along with many iron items.

Due to current website problems, I'm passing this ID request along for him. Hopefully all problems will be sorted out in the future! To obtain a picture of the button in question (and it's neat!), contact the owner at:

Solid Cast Iron......Block "I"?????

Since the picture upload was messed up when I originally posted this (or Pia did for me), here are the scans. What was/is it? I've used chalk to highlight the raised rim and "I" and also the area missing off the back.

Thanks, Roger

OOps, Sent the wrong scan.....Here is the correct one! I'm thinking this is more in the line of a Rosette?

Man, I have looked all over for a match to that.... and havent found one. It IS DEFINATELY A CONFEDERATE BLOCK I though. I would have to say that it is a large coat button... but it's still only a guess.

Solid Cast Iron!

Hey Everyone,
This piece is solid cast iron. It weighs 28 grams. Here is a hand drawn sketch with most of the measurements. Don't know what it is.....a Rare Generals Bridle Rosette or Overcoat Button????? I wish!

Thanks For Looking And Your Suggestions, Roger (RAW)

"I Button??"

This is a first-- never seen anything like this dug and you also have me worried about discriminating out the iron stuff. I have found plenty of large flat buttons in Confederate positions matching that 1.2" diameter.
Are you sure the "I" is not where it broke off of something? Maybe brazed on the end of a "I" shaped piece of metal?

Just a thought.

Unknown "I"

Hello Fuse, The side with the raised outer ring and "I" doesn't appear th have been broken off. These raised areas are pretty much smooth (except where the elements have pitted the Iron over the years). The back is missing some Iron and this area appears to have been broken off.
Tom Stelma thought it might have been some sort of a Stamp or Seal?
I really don't know what it is, but I have one :D
P.S. When I start finding Relics (lead, brass, pewter, etc.) I also start digging the bigger Iron signals.....eating forks, spoons, knives, gun tools, wormer/jags, factory made iron nipple protectors, main springs and other gun parts and lots of square headed iron/nickel nails.
Thanks For Looking, Roger (raw-war-digger)
